HIGHWAY NETWORK FOR ALL CROATIAN CONCESSIONAIRES

More than 1250km of highway network on all highways in Croatia (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A8, A9) is controlled and managed through Telegra’s traffic management systems, which is approximately 99% of entire traffic management infrastructure on Croatian Highways.
The systems are managed through the network of 20 control and management centers established on regional level. All those centers are operated with topXview™ Complete ITS platform. topXview™ supports operator’s work by running automation algorithms that automatically detect modifications in traffic flow and weather conditions and suggest operational strategies to operators.
These traffic management systems include following quantities of ITS devices: 3000 Dynamic Message Signs, 750 Roadside controllers, 1100 emergency roadside telephones, 3500 inner illumination signs, 140 weather stations, etc.

 

TUNNELS ON CROATIAN HIGHWAY NETWORK

1250km long highway network includes 53 tunnels, with more than 90km total length of tunnel tubes. All of those tunnels are integral part of traffic management systems delivered by Telegra. Operation of all these tunnels is supported with automatic safety procedures executed in topXview™ system enabling fast response to incidents (traffic jams, accidents, fire, etc.) in tunnels which significantly increases safety of all passengers.
EuroTAP (European Tunnel Assessment Programme) has recognized this and awarded some of those tunnels as Safest Tunnels in European annual competitions.
Some of the most important tunnels are listed below in separate paragraphs.

 

 A1 HIGHWAY, TUNNEL SVETI ROK

The Sveti Rok Tunnel is a highway tunnel in Lika, Croatia. It is 5,679 m long and connects mountainous region of Lika with seaside and passes through the Velebit mountain. Sveti Rok Tunnel, along with 4 other sorter tunnels (Ledenik, Bristovac, Čelinka and Krpani are operated from a control center placed near the northern entrance of Sveti Rok Tunnel. Tunnel Main Operations and Maintenance Center. Some of the subsystems and equipment deployed along the tunnel and adjacent roads are; Dynamic Message Sign, emergency phones, fire detection, public announcement system, radio broadcasting system, air quality system, barriers, traffic counters and classifiers, video surveillance, video automatic incident detection, etc.

The main tunnel control center as well as the backup control center placed near the southern entrance of Sveti Rok entrance are powered by topXview™. Complete ITS Platform software. The system is built in such a manner that it is not only immune to a first error but it also enables seamless takeover of complete operation from the backup control center in case of break of communication between main control center and part of equipment. Each of control centers is equipped with automated and semi-automated scenarios that enable operators to resolve any possible incident.

 

A1 HIGHWAY, TUNNEL MALA KAPELA

Throughout its 5,780 meters of length, the tunnel is equipped with equipment and system to ensure safe and fluent traffic. Some of the subsystems and equipment deployed in the tunnel and at its entrances are; LED traffic signs (lane control signs, variable message signs, dynamic message signs, speed limit signs etc.), emergency phones, fire detection, public announcement system, radio broadcasting system, air quality system, barriers, traffic counters and classifiers, video surveillance, video automatic incident detection, etc. The main tunnel control center as well as the backup control center in the nearby Control center Brinje are powered by topXview™ traffic control center software. The main control center enables fast overview of traffic situation in the tunnel on the control room’s video wall. Implemented automated and semi-automated scenarios enable operators to resolve any possible incident or regular situation in fast, unambiguous and safe manner.

 

A1 HIGHWAY, TUNNEL BRINJE

Awarded the "Safest Tunnel in Europe" award by EuroTAP (European Tunnel Assessment Programme) in 2007, tunnel is equipped with the state of the art traffic management system that unifies traffic management software and tunnel SCADA. The surveillance is conducted 24/7 from the Operations and Maintenance Control Center Brinje. It is equipped with video cameras that display the situation on monitors in Control Center and provide the possibility of automatic detection of congestion, driving in opposite direction, recording the number of vehicle, their movement and they also supply the accurate data to the traffic operator in order to obviate congestions. The system of dynamic traffic signals (warnings, restrictions) is introduced to provide information for the drivers. In the event of incidents or broken down vehicles the drivers may also use the communication system (emergency phones) to contact the Operations and Maintenance Control Center team.

 

A6 HIGHWAY, TUNNEL VELIKI GLOŽAC

Veliki Gložac is one of 13 tunnels found on the Croatian A6 motorway route. It is 1,126 meters (3,694 ft.) long and consists of two tunnel tubes. It is located between Vrbovsko and Bosiljevo 2 interchanges. The tunnel is equipped with SOS niches, ventilation system, tunnel lighting and fire alarm system. Adequate light signaling, signal and measuring devices and video surveillance of tunnel entrance and traffic in the tunnel tube are envisaged.

Tunnel is operated from the Delnice OMC. Maximally safe traffic flow is ensured by anticipated measures of traffic impact as well as traffic control, not only in regular but also in emergency situations.

Tunnel Veliki Gložac was pronounced equal best as safest tunnel in Europe in 2008 by EuroTAP (European Tunnel Assessment Programme).
